European field elm

The elm is a smooth-barked tree. Its later longitudinally furrowed branches are covered with alternate, petioled leaves. The leaves are ovate, the leaf blade is irregular, the margin is doubly serrated. Bundles of flowers develop on the truncated branches in early spring, which flower before the leaves bud. Pollination is by wind. The fruits are winged achenes. It can live for 600 years and grow to a height of 40 metres.
