Turkey oak

It istree growing to a height of 20-30 m. It is roughly branched, the rhizomes are thick and pear-shaped. The leaves are petiolate, the blade is variable in shape, rounded at the base, pinnately to feathery, dark green and glossy on the face, lighter and downy on the reverse. Especially out of the growing season, the awl-shaped palistes are conspicuous, not falling with the leaves but persisting. The acorns are sessile or short-stalked. It is the only one of our native oaks to have the outer side of the cone densely covered with up to 1 cm long, awl-shaped scales
